Artist Statement

I am captivated by chaos and the non-linear. The liminal space that exists between nothing and the cosmos. It is in this basin that I create art. I see my artwork as vessels to express my relationship with the natural and psychological landscape. These vessels also serve as an invitation for the viewer to have their own unmediated experience.

In my drawings I often employ a U-shaped form that acts both as an armature for me to build visual spaces; and as a visual representation of a vessel that can hold the contents of the drawing. Wheel thrown and altered ceramic pots serve as bodily vessels to stand alongside and punctuate the two-dimensional work.

Materials drive my art making practice but do not define it. I am drawn into the sensual nature of materials and the questions they pose. Clay on the wheel is plastic. Circulating through my hands, stretching and contracting in response to my touch. Ink is quiet and watery. Puddling on the surface of the paper and then slowly absorbing into its pours. Graphite is hard. Scratching its way into existence. I seek out processes that require me to surrender to them and provide me variables that are outside of my control. It is here that the chaotic abyss can grow.
